flautas FAQs

The flauta, named for its striking resemblance to a flute, is one of the most culturally significant staples of Mexican street food heritage. While the practice of wrapping fillings in soft corn tortillas (tacos) dates back to ancient Mesoamerica, the specific emergence of the crispy, rolled taco (flautas) we celebrate today represents a fascinating evolution in Mexican cuisine.

Flautas emerged as a clever, practical method for preserving shredded meats and potatoes, tightly rolling them into fresh tortillas and then frying them to keep the fillings secure.

What are Flautas?

What is the difference vs Tacos?

2

Tacos are generally any food served on soft tortillas.

Flautas are large tacos always rolled & made crispy. This is done thorough deep frying them at 200°C for 3 minutes only to achieve its characteristic crunch.

Crispy on the outside, warm and soft on the inside. Think of biting into a crunchy shell that gives way to tender, well-seasoned filling. They're eaten by hand, no cutlery needed, and best enjoyed in three or four bites.

What else can be used as a filling for Flautas?

3

Flautas can be filled with everything and anything, as long as the filling does not melts in boiling hot oil. Traditional flautas in Mexico include: Lamb barbacoa, pork carnitas, pulled beef, shredded chicken, mashed potatoes, and green bell peppers.

What kind of garnishes can be used in Flautas?

Flautas are traditionally garnished with guacamole, salsa (any colour and type), grated cheese, sour cream or crème fraîche, and in some households they use finely cut lettuce, onions and even radishes as additional toppings.
